A reader and friend asked me to make a template communication to send to Congressional representatives on the Mueller investigation. Here’s a sample I came up with that contains the main message I think Congress needs to hear. 

Some members of Congress may already have made statements along these lines. I’m not sure. But as things heat up with this investigation, so too—inevitably—will various efforts to discredit the people running it.

Dear____,

I am writing as your constituent to ask you to affirmatively support the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team into Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election, and any associated misconduct by President Trump or his associates.

Specifically, I ask you to promise—publicly—that you will not support or tolerate any effort by the Trump administration or its associates to discredit or terminate Mr. Mueller, or otherwise obstruct his team’s investigation into criminal activity by persons operating in or on behalf of the executive branch. 

I further expect you to take whatever official actions necessary to prevent your colleagues in Congress from interfering with the Special Counsel’s office or its investigative mandate.

This is a very serious moment for American democracy, and it transcends party politics. As my representative/Senator, I hope and expect that you will respect and promote the rule of law consistent with the Special Counsel’s Order of Appointment.
