Forget Craigslist. The Internet Needs Freudslist
I sweartagawd, every time I read the Juneau Craigslist personals I think to myself: (1) this ad cannot be real; and (2) assuming it is real, this person needs therapy. This "GL" (good-looking?) early thirties man ISO a mommy-lover is Exhibit A of what I'm talking about.Sigmund Freud was a truly fascinating if problematic thinker, and for that reason alone I suggest further reading on his life and ideas. Most applicable here, however, is Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of psychosexual development and the Oedipus complex.
The Oedipus complex, rooted in the ancient Greek mythological character of Oedipus, holds that “the child has an unconscious desire for the opposite-sex parent,” the successful resolution of which is, ultimately, “identification with the same-sex parent.”
Translation: the Oedipus complex = a son who wants to bang his own mom and kill his dad.
Here’s the good news though: Freud posited that this was completely normal! He claimed that the Oedipal desire of the son for his mother is “a universal, psychological phenomenon innate to human beings, and the cause of much unconscious guilt.” He wrote that “it is the fate of all of us, perhaps, to direct our first sexual impulse toward our mother and our first hatred and our first murderous wish against our father.”
Translation: It’s normal for a son to want to bang his mom and kill his dad.
Freud is kind of old-school, but his ideas were legit and many of them persist for that reason. All of which is to say, I actually sympathize with this dude because what he's expressing is likely your normal, run-of-the-mill Oedipal complex-type-shit.
What’s MORE interesting to me, however, is why in his early thirties this guy's Oedipus complex remains as yet unresolved, which brings me to the concept of Freudslist.
Freudslist would be a better place to post this ad, or at least another forum for it. Because while he is looking for an ersatz Mommy-girlfriend, he could also seek out a therapist who might help answer the following seven questions:
1. Who hurt you?
2. Was it your mom?
3. It was your mom, wasn’t it?
4. Also, is your dad a total asshole?
5. He totally is, isn’t he?
6. None of that is your fault. You know that, right?
7. Do you realize that in-depth psychotherapy with the right skilled professional can help you appreciate and destigmatize the root of this fetish and understand why it persists into adulthood, thereby increasing your sense of self-awareness and developing the closure you need on childhood trauma to enable you to have a functional, co-equal relationship with another adult?
I’m telling you, Freudslist. Internet: make it happen!
