Get Used to the USA in Africa

No, this isn't "Africa Week" at CDRSalamander, but there are - finally - some god discussion open source about what already is a top-shelf security challenge, and will dominate the mid-century concerns when its trending demographics, economics, corruption, and the bleeding edge of Dar al-Islam all dovetail together.

Yesterday's post gave a snapshot of China's latest in Africa - today let's look towards home and check in with Nick Turse's reporting in The Intercept;
While the review was reportedly ordered this spring and troop reductions may be coming, there is no evidence yet ... In fact, the number of commandos operating on the continent has barely budged since 2017.
...
According to figures provided to The Intercept by U.S. Special Operations Command, 16.5 percent of commandos overseas are deployed in Africa. This is about the same percentage of special operators sent to the continent in 2017 and represents a major increase over deployments during the first decade of the post-9/11 war on terror. In 2006, for example, just 1 percent of all U.S. commandos deployed overseas were in Africa – fewer than in the Middle East, the Pacific, Europe, or Latin America. By 2010, the number had risen only slightly, to 3 percent.

Today, more U.S. commandos are deployed to Africa than to any other region of the world except the Middle East. Back in 2006, there were only 70 special operators deployed across Africa. Just four years ago, there were still just 700 elite troops on the continent. Given that an average of 8,300 commandos are deployed overseas in any given week, according to SOCOM spokesperson Ken McGraw, we can surmise that roughly 1,370 Green Berets, Navy SEALs, or other elite forces are currently operating in Africa.
Get used to it.

Long-time readers here know that I am not a fan of the USA being global policeman, imperial enforcers, or global busy bodies ... but the strategic case for involvement - in a modest number and humble goals - in Africa is clear.

A little oh-by-the-way. As the Sahel does on a regular bases in cycles, the "green" is spreading as rainfall increases. It has done this in the past as it will in the future. The other side of the coin is when the wet times end and the Sahara once again marches south. If, in the likely even it coincides with the mid-century demographics/economics storm in Sub-Saharan Africa we've covered here for the last few years, it will be an accelerate to what will already be a raging fire.

We and the Europeans need to keep our presence and involvement through all the national levers of power to do what we can to help the Africans build a modern society and economy that can bring stability and some measure of prosperity to its people. If we and they fail, the frag pattern in an era of cheap travel and porous borders will impact everyone.
