The vaccine was never shown to block transmission of the originating variant. Ever. It had no sterilizing effect. Ever. This was known long before the jabs given enmasse.
Therefore it couldn’t possibly work against a rebranded variant of the same virus.
I've flogged that dead horse previously and will again, at the end of this latest lashing. (Digression: If so many of you would stop acting like dead animals the flogging your allowing for will cease)

No overestimating took place here. The science was followed. The spin was avoided. The “world” (aka the misleading media and political class) absolutely hyper (excessive/more then normal) bloviated (talk at length, especially in an inflated or empty way) about the vaccines “power”

“Then you don’t necessarily have to keep going and getting a vaccine every year, for example. You could rely on some level of natural exposure as long as all the people who are at particular risk have been given the opportunity to be vaccinated as well,” he said.
Wear a mask? Social distancing. Seems counterintuitive to benefiting from natural boosters that will keep people’s immunity levels high??? However, social distancing and continued mask wearing certainly benefits big pharma's profit margin, right? They want you to get a vaccine every year, year after year after year..

Vaccinated people infected with the Delta coronavirus variant may be able to spread it as easily as those who have yet to be immunised, early analysis suggests.
Although the Covid jabs appears to reduce an individual’s overall risk of catching Delta in the first place, if infected there appears to be “limited difference” in the viral load between the vaccinated and unvaccinated, according to new research from Public Health England (PHE).
“This may have implications for people’s infectiousness, whether they have been vaccinated or not,” said PHE
"Some initial findings ... indicate that levels of virus in those who become infected with Delta having already been vaccinated may be similar to levels found in unvaccinated people," PHE said in a statement.
The findings echo those from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which last week raised concerns that vaccinated people infected with Delta could, unlike with other variants (?), readily transmit it
Dr Simon Clarke, a microbiology professor at Reading University, told Sky News that the study was a “big deal”. If vaccination “only blocks transmission by, say, 50 per cent you’ll never get herd immunity even with a 100 per cent vaccine uptake,” he said, adding that more studies are needed to find “a definitive answer”.
